The Friedensengel, also known as the Angel of Peace, is an elaborate monument that commemorates the 1871 Treaty of Versailles. A single Corinthian column rises from a fountain with a gilded statue of the Angel of Peace at the top, who stands guarding the peace that came about after the Franco-Prussian War. Gilded figures and mosaics at the base of the monument represent Peace, War, Culture, and Victory, and there are portraits of three German emperors that adorn the space as well. The steps surrounding the monument can often play host to a party on holidays, especially New Year's Eve.
