Hamburg is a port city, with rivers, harbours and canals galore and it's trying to make the most of the waterside for residential, commercial, cultural and leisure purposes, following the decline of the old free harbour. A new, human-scale, vibrant district of the town, Havenstadt, is coming into being, right on the waterfront.
It's a thoughtfully planned development, blending the old warehouse architecture with new restaurants, shops and entertainment venues as well as some office blocks.
It's already a vibrant part of the city, with plenty of atmosphere, waterside walks and excellent restaurants.
