The Prenzlauer Berg neighborhood is a great place to have a beer or a classic cocktail. It's a bit more refined than some of the more infamous East Berlin communities, so expect to see fewer tattoos and piercings in the crowd. You’ll find Berlin's oldest beer garden, the Prater Garten, which survived World War II and East German rule. Kulturbrauerei, a former brewery complex, now offers a nice mix of pubs and quick eats. Much of the Berg’s action is concentrated around Kastanienallee, where there’s still a tiny bit of its counter-culture spirit of years past, but mostly just a lot of tourists.
