The Place de la Bastille, often referred to as “Bastille,” is a square that used to contain the Bastille prison until it was torn down in the midst of the French Revolution. Now the square contains at its center the July Column that is topped with a statue of the Spirit of Freedom. The business surrounding the square have also embraced the spirit freedom with most nights filled with the sounds of bustling cafés and bars; and the pounding beats of night clubs and concerts. One fun feature of the square is that the outlines of original fort are marked in the square so you can see where the prison stood before being relegated to history.
