Chef-owner explains that he started putting figs on pizzas six years ago. Other restaurants copied him. So to stamp his ownership on the idea - and perhaps dissuade them - he moved· a few years ago from Lower Templestowe to Kew and included "figs" in his new restaurant's name.
Pizze e Fichi is not a place to visit for the ambiance. It's more or less a basic, modem, spic-and-span, glass-fronted cafe in a busy suburban shopping strip. You sit on comfortable bistro chairs at solid vinyl-topped tables. You use good heavy alloy cutlery and paper napkins, which are changed for each course. The walls are white or sponged in mid-grey and the floor is of hardwood strips. Ambiance? Attend to the food.
