Musee Carnavalet documents the history of Paris from its earliest origins to the present. Though it is historical in nature and does contain some archaeological fragments, Carnavalet is an art museum with mostly original works that embody the genius of Paris. Housed in two former mansions (Hôtel Carnavalet and the Hôtel Le Peletier de Saint Fargeau), the museum is spread out over around 100 rooms and many colorful gardens. The museum tries to capture the atmosphere of the City of Lights through displays showing the city’s transformation over time into an intellectual, political, and artistic capital.
