Residence of a Genius

Gertrude Stein, the preeminent American writer and art collector, lived for thirty-three years at this apartment in the Left Bank. Her salon was a gathering spot for the artists, writers, and intellectuals who called Paris home during the first decades of the 20th century—Hemingway, Picasso, and F. Scott Fitzgerald were close associates of Stein. Today, there is a plaque above the nondescript door that commemorates the historical intrigue of the building.
