Villefranche is considered a suburb of Nice—but don't let that word conjure up images of boring cul-de-sacs, because this small village has character. The densely packed, red roofed buildings of the Old Town are tantalizing to the intrepid urban explorer. If you need a place to start, drop into the quixotic Chapelle Saint Pierre, then take a stroll through Rue Obscure ("the Dark Road"—an ancient street surrounded by buildings on both sides and overhead). It is possible to walk to Villefranche from Nice in about an hour; a regional TER train will get you there within 20 minutes or less and only cost you about €4 round trip; or buses number 81 or 100 will take you there.
