A particular interest in sporting history and ephemera is not a necessity for enjoyment of this eclectic collection, which houses a wide range of sport-related items. Things in the collection date from the 16th Century to the present day and include sports equipment, and a wide range of documents and books relating to the subject.
The museum was first established in 1922 by the French Minister of War, who, intriguing, had responsibility for sports. While the museum had a bumpy road and was all but washed up, it was re-established in the 1960s. There have been several changes since then and the museum, much improved, moved to its current location in 2008.
