Those who stroll down from castle hill will see this moving marble memorial, erected to commemorate those from Nice who died in the First World War. Four thousand Nice residents in total died in the conflict, which claimed the lives of so many others.
This memorial was erected in 1928 in the side of the hill. The site adds a poignancy and visual interest to the side of the hill, which was scarred by prior quarry workings. The cliffs loom above the monument, which gleams bright white in the Nice sunshine.
