On a hilltop, looming over the winding streets of Nice's old town, there's a large cemetery, complete with dazzling Italianate memorials and touching photographs of the deceased. The marble monuments gleam in the Mediterranean sun and the cemetery feels far from gloomy.
The Cimetiere du Chateau was built on the ruins of the ancient town citadel, and the remains of a later fort can still be seen among the tombs. Visitors usually feel exhilarated rather than depressed after taking a leisurely stroll around the monumental masonry. There's an amazing, panoramic view of the city from the hilltop site.
