A Standing Testament

Standing majestically on a hillside slope on Katajanokka peninsula, Uspenski Cathedral offers a spectacular view of the city of Helsinki. Known to locals as Uspenskin katedraali, the Eastern Orthodox cathedral was designed by Russian architect Aleksey Gornostayev, who did not live to see construction of his project.

About half a million visitors make the pilgrimage to view the historical religious icons that are housed in this architectural wonder and active church every year.
