The Old Operating Theatre, is not your typical theatre. It never showed movies or Shakespearean plays, this theatre like it names says was a literal Operating Theatre. It was where medical student students and doctors alike would watch live operations happen, mind you these were the pre-antiseptic days. These were the days when doing surgery quickly was in the best interest of the patient and when they had to keep saw dust on hand to mop up the blood. This museum is not for the faint hearted. Even its location is a little eerie, it sits atop St Thomas Church where you must climb a spiral staircase to access it. But if you’re interested in medicine this museum is definitely worth checking out, it is the oldest operating theatre in England and houses original 19th century surgical instruments and pathological specimens.
