This impressive monument commemorates one of the most important British figures of the Victorian era. It is definitely worth stopping to admire the structure and snap some good photos. Queen Victoria commissioned it to be built for her husband after his death in 1861. It represents the British Empire at one of its peaks of power, which you can see on each of its four corners; they hold sculptures representing the four continents that Britain had influence over at the time. The architectural style is Gothic Revival, and is modeled after a similar structure in Verona, Italy.
