The National Gallery houses the largest and most comprehensive art collection in Denmark. It's arranged chronologically, and with such a big collection you can't hope to cover the whole thing at once, so it's probably best to pick a period or an artist to concentrate on.
You needn't worry about fitting everything in one time around, because the permanent collection is free, although there is a charge for the special exhibitions. There's a wealth of well-known art works at the gallery, but an outstanding feature is the Matisse collection. The National Gallery is one of the six 'park museums', all set within an easy walk of one another in a series of tranquil parks in Copenhagen's museum district.
