The National Gallery houses the largest and most comprehensive art collection in Denmark. It's arranged chronologically, and with such a big collection you can't hope to cover the whole thing at once, so it's probably best to pick a period or an artist to concentrate on.
You needn't worry about fitting everything in, because the permanent collection is free, although there is a charge for the special exhibitions.
There's a wealth of well-known art works at the gallery, but an outstanding feature is the Matisse collection.
