Pedro Luis Brion was an admiral in the Venezuelan Army who helped fight for independence in the War for Venezuelan Independence. This freedom fighter is memorialized in a statue in the Brionplein, a plaza named for him.
Brion was born in Curacao and studied nautical sciences and maritime trade extensively, helping him to create superior battle tactics as he aided Venezuela in its struggle for independence. His body is interred in Venezuela, but this statue in Curacao was erected to honor the human rights activist. The plaza has impressive views of the Emmabrug Bridge and the colorful architecture surrounding the area.
