If your travels take you to Dubrovnik - and Croatia is becoming a destination for more tourists in recent years - do not miss out on the opportunity to dine at Proto. Celebrated for its seafood, they take pride in preparing their dishes according to the old recipes of the fishermen themselves. Be sure to involve the sommelier in your choice of a local Croatian wine; they are excellent. The restaurant, located in the center of the Old Town, was founded in 1886, and the décor (while recently renovated) has as much Old World atmosphere as you expect from such a venerable institution. The main dining room is wonderful, but the canopy-covered terrace has its own charms. Take a break from your day for lunch or make an evening reservation.
