Old Town Grand Entrance

Pile Gate is the illustrious entrance to Dubrovnic's Old Town. Built in 1537, the gate used to feature a wooden drawbridge, but today visitors will walk across a stone bridge to access the inner and outer gates of this historic landmark.

Be sure to glance down that the green space beneath the stone bridge. It used to contain a moat, which was another effective defense of the city. Pile Gate is also flanked by two beautiful statues that were added during the twentieth century and feature the craftsmanship of the Croatian sculptor Ivan Mestrovic.
