With the modern style and pace of Hong Kong, it is easy to forget that the city - indeed, the whole area - has a history that goes back many centuries. For a look into Hong Kong's past, this heritage trail in the Yuen Long District in the New Territories takes visitors on a short (one-kilometer) walk through three villages which still retain sites that reflect traditional Chinese history. You'll see pagodas, temples, shrines and ancestral halls. There are also several restored study halls, where students used to prepare for the all-important imperial civil service examinations. Restaurants are available on the way, if you want to rest and have a meal. Be sure to go to the visitor's center, housed in the old Ping Shan Police Station; the gallery and displays of artifacts will add to your understanding of the area.
