The sister cities of Burnaby, British Columbia and Kushiro, Japan share such a strong bond that Playground of the Gods (Kamui Mintara, in Japanese) was created as a permanent physical representation.
Created by sculptor Toko Nuburi, the dozen totem pole structure was unveiled in 1990 to mark 25 years of goodwill between the cities. The carved posts cast dramatic shadows broken by the setting sun across the vast Vancouver landscape.
