Making Toronto Sustainable One Brick at a Time

Established in 1889, The Don Valley Brick Works provided bricks and other materials to well-known local landmarks for a century. After shutting down, the quarry transformed into a park and the original buildings were recycled into an environmentally focused community and cultural center by a charity known as Evergreen.

Today, Evergreen Brickworks works to converts deteriorating structures into sustainable urban gardening solutions. Their ongoing work and effort led to national recognition as they earned placement on National Geographic's top 10 Geo Tourism Destinations in 2010. Next time you're near the Don River Valley, be sure to stop by the weekend farmer's market to stock up on fresh produce year-round, help support local markets, or simply enjoy local cuisine made with the freshest local ingredients available.
