This fort was originally established at the top of the cliff overlooking what later became Lower Town (Basse-Ville) by Samuel de Champlain in 1620. Over the subsequent decades and centuries it continued to be expanded and re-fortified under many generations of French and, later, English governors of Canada. Now recognized as an important major archaeological and historic Canadian site, you can visit the complexes of four forts and two chateaus. Guided tours will give you a good grounding on the history of the forts, the lives of the governors - French and English - and the conditions of the troops who manned the fortifications.
