In English, the name of this park is “people’s park”, which is a perfect description of its function in the center of Vienna. It was opened sometime around 1820, and shortly after that the focal point of the park was built by Austrian architect Peter von Nobile: the Theseus Temple. It’s a replica of an ancient Greek temple, and was commissioned by Napoleon. Today, it’s a popular meeting place for locals to hang out and take in the sights and sounds of the park. Other pleasant features include an impressive rose garden and a memorial to Empress Elisabeth.
