This famous square, located in Vienna’s historic center, is home to a variety of cultural festivals and events throughout the year, and is a popular meeting place for tourists and locals alike. The most famous festival is the annual Christmas Market, which is the largest in Vienna and attracts millions of visitors every year. After that, the square is turned into an ice skating rink until mid-March, allowing for more versatile uses throughout the spring. There is a bike festival and a travel festival which both happen in April, an AIDS charity event during May/June, and the famous Rathaus film festival that takes place in July and August every year. It’s a great tourist draw as it features films of different themes on warm Vienna evenings. However, even when there’s not a festival taking place, Rathausplatz is buzzing with activity, and is a great place to pass time between more “demanding” attractions.
