The personality of a few Viennese drinking establishments is so big, that they’ve made an impression worldwide. Places like Loos American Bar, where a barmaid is named after a character in Kill Bill: Vol. 2, and First Floor, where there is an aquarium for walls, are just a couple examples. The onyx marble walls, checkered tile floors, and mahogany wood panels of the former private gentleman’s club, Loos American Bar, have such an allure that this bar has been recreated in Manhattan. First Floor, barely traceable from the exterior, continues to make Viennese modernist architecture look stylish and exclusive, serving over 200 cocktails in front of a wall of swaying seaweed and fish. Planter’s Club also offers an enormous selection of carefully crafted drinks, in what looks like a mansion from the colonial period. Drink and be merry among fine imported furniture, dim lights, and the sounds of soul and jazz.
