The Legend

Completed in 1973, the Sydney Opera House doesn't need much of an introduction: It's easily among the world's most famous buildings, and a city symbol on par with the Statue of Liberty, the Eiffel Tower, and Big Ben. The white shells of its roof loom over Sydney Harbour like sails, composing a glorious epitome of Expressionist architecture.

The Opera House is much more than an iconic Australian photo op, though: After all, it plays host to Opera Australia, the Sydney Symphony Orchestra, the Australian Ballet, and the Sydney Theatre Company, ensuring a calendar richly strung with world-class live performances.
