The Coathanger

Sydneysiders like to call the Sydney Harbour Bridge the "Coathanger," a nickname reflecting the structure's arch form while downplaying its epic stature. This is the world's biggest steel arch bridge and a dual icon of Sydney alongside the nearby Opera House.

Spanning 1,654 feet and rising to 440 from the water below, the Harbour Bridge has helped define the skyline of Sydney's waterfront since 1934. National symbol that it is, the bridge has hosted numerous events and celebrations, including the annual spectacle of the Sydney New Year's Eve gala.
