Pride Parade, Pride Party

The Sydney Gay & Lesbian Mardi Gras marks one of the biggest LGBT pride festivals in the world, not to mention among Australia's best-known and most well-attended parades. Drawing thousands of attendees from near and far, the Mardi Gras celebration dates back to 1978, when the inaugural run-through--part of the worldwide Gay Solidarity Celebrations--ended in a notorious police crackdown.

The parade has weathered this and other obstacles to become the beloved and world-famous institution that it is: full of colorful pageantry, political activism, and, naturally, heapfuls of fun and entertainment.
