The imposing 19th-century Gothic building today inhabited by the Fremantle Arts Centre once served as the Asylum for the Criminally Insane. These days, it's a much brighter facility: a venue for concerts, art exhibitions, classes, and working artist studios. Regular events include multiple showcases for Aboriginal artistry, including heats for the Melbourne International Comedy Festival "Deadly Funny" competition featuring Aboriginal and Torres Straits comedians. The FOUND shop, meanwhile, sells a whole array of artwork, jewelry, and other crafts produced by Western Australian artisans.
