Australia claims its own world-class, world-famous sports stadium in the Melbourne Cricket Ground, which has presented high-drama athletic spectacle since 1853. The "G," as it's familiarly known, is home base for the Melbourne Cricket Club and the Victorian Bushrangers cricket team as well as a prominent roster of Australian Football League clubs. It's also hosted its fair share of rugby and soccer, the 1956 Olympic Games and the 2006 Commonwealth Games, various rock stars, and a pope for good measure. There's nothing like taking in a match or a concert at the MCG, but even when the field is quiet you can take a guided tour or swing by the National Sports Museum within.
