No visit to Melbourne is quite complete without a foray or two into the Bourke Street Mall, the Central Business District's teeming retail heart. Strung between Swanston and Elizabeth streets, the mall is a car-free shopper's paradise, navigable by foot and by tram. Among the landmarks is the grand General Post Office, which really was a post office back in the early 1900s but now is (of course) a lavish shopping center. Stock up on the latest fashion, refuel at the mall's restaurants or lounges, and rest your footsore self on one of the many streetside benches--also great people-watching perches.
