In Moreton Island, Brisbanites enjoy a paradisal retreat from urbanity just across Moreton Bay. The landscape on this huge Coral Sea sand island is lovely: pearly beaches, towering dunes, gum woodlands, riffled lakes, and the seawater swimming holes of the Champagne Pools. Slip into snorkel or scuba gear and cruise coral reefs and sunken hulks such as the Tangalooma Wrecks. Give sand tobogganing on the mighty dunes a try while feasting on top-grade mainland views--sunsets over the spiky Glass House Mountains are stunning. Or put your history cap on with a visit to vintage lighthouses and the World War II relics of Fort Cowan Cowan. All in all, it's not particularly hard to see why they call Moreton the Gem of South East Queensland.
