Bold Beacon

Most of spectacular Moreton Island comes floored with sand, but up around North Point a rocky outcrop gives the Cape Moreton Lighthouse--the oldest light in Queensland--a prominent and sturdy perch. The red-banded beacon, built of locally quarried sandstone in 1857, is an attraction in and of itself, but the site has further appeal as a good vantage for spotting dolphins, dugongs, sea turtles, and (from June to November) humpback whales. The Cape Moreton Light is still doing its job faithfully, only these days, instead of blazing by oil wick as it originally did, it projects a powerful laser beam nearly 20 miles out to sea.
