The SS Antilla ranks among the biggest shipwrecks in the entire Caribbean, and certainly one of the top underwater destinations in Aruba. In 1940, on the eve of the Second World War, the crew of this 400-foot-long German cargo ship scuttled it in an attempt to evade capture by Dutch authorities. The crewmen were ultimately imprisoned, and the vessel found its briny grave in Malmok Bay.
Situated in 60 feet of water with a sideboard portion breaking the surface, the Antilla wreck is no mere historical artifact: It's also a veritable sea garden, cocooned as it is in coral and tube sponges and haunted by tangs, morays, lobsters, giant groupers, and sea turtles.
